Das Festival der Empörung

On November 24th, 2019 we will have our very own literary award ceremony at the “Festival der Empörung,” in which we will recognize the most (globally) impactful “artistic scandal,” which that we encountered over the course of the semester. During our “Festival der Empörung” you will present in a team of 2-3 students one artistic scandal and perform a dialogue between the author and a representative from the “Kulturbetrieb” in which you present the artists’ work and reflect upon the ways in which the scandal shaped the contemporary. The aim of the festival is to review the encountered artistic scandals and to convince the “Jury” of the global impact of each author and their work. The best (your voice counts! We will vote anonymously) presentation will win the “Preis der Empörung.” The presentations during the “Festival der Empörung” will be filmed. In addition to the creative team-based assignment, each team member will write an individual research paper (6 pages) that will also be used as the assessment tool for the General Education requirement in the Humanities. It is designed to allow you to demonstrate your development as a critical reader of different media and sophisticated writer of texts in German. The final analytical paper is due on Saturday, December 7, 2019.

Guiding questions for your group presentations:

1. Hintergrund: Wer ist der oder die Autor*in? (You can interview the author!)
2. Um was geht es in dem Werk? (You can read a very impactful passage of the text!)
3. Welche kulturellen Normen wurden verletzt? Welche Rolle spielen „gender” (Geschlecht), “class” (soziale Herkunft), “race”, “sexuality” (Sexualität) und “political orientation (politische Orientierung) in ihrem Werk? (You can have a little discussion with your partner)
4. Welchen Skandal löste das künstlerische Werk aus? Warum ist der Skandal faszinierend für Sie? (Refer to the media reception)
5. Ist ihr Skandal der beste Skandal unseres Kurses? Überzeugen Sie uns mit ihren Argumenten!! Warum sollten wir für ihren Skandal wählen? (Your voice and opinion matters!) Tipp: Überlegen Sie sich, für wen und warum dieser Skandal interessant sein könnte? Wäre der Skandal auch in den USA auch von Interesse? Welche Themen sind heute noch aktuell? Was müssen wir in unserer Gesellschaft debattieren? Spricht der künstlerische Skandal etwas in unserer heutigen Gesellschaft an, dass noch immer nicht aufgelöst bzw. ungeklärt scheint? (Konjunktiv)
