Dana Beach Outstanding Service Award
Master of Science in Environmental Studies (MES) Program Nominations Due *Wednesday, April 10th, 12:00 p.m.*
For the twelfth time in the history of the Master of Science in Environmental Studies (MES) Program, it is our pleasure to announce a call for nominations for MESSA’s annual award: The Dana Beach Outstanding Service Award.
Local resident Dana Beach has contributed significantly to the environment in this community. Specifically, he organized and has served as Executive Director of the Coastal Conservation League, the “state’s most visible and influential environmental non-profit organization.” (Charleston Post & Courier, 2001).
Mr. Beach was educated at Davidson College and earned an MBA from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. He worked on Wall Street after completing his MBA, and then served as assistant to the US Representative Arthur Ravenel, focusing on environmental issues. When Mr. Beach and his family moved to South Carolina, he further developed his interest in Lowcountry natural history. He volunteered for local environmental organizations such as the Audubon and Sierra Club chapters and became more interested in developing additional avenues to affect environmental policy.
Many of our MES students have substantially contributed to the MES Program and to the college and greater community. To acknowledge some of these many efforts, and to encourage students in their long-term civic participation, the Master of Environmental Studies Student Association (MESSA) is issuing a call for nominations for the service award in Mr. Beach’s name. Students who had substantial service contributions to the Program and community should be nominated by their peers.
Students who have received this award in the past include:
Brooke James (2012), Lindsey Graham and Jennifer Jones (2011), C. Guinn Garrett (2010), Jenn Scales (2009), Nikki Seibert (2008), Jessica Barton (2007), Jennifer Beck (2006), Kristan McKinne (2005), Tommy Linstroth (2004), Katharine Owens (2003), Lucie Hartley (2002)
