Sullivan’s Island, Shem Creek, Pawleys Island, Isle of Palms, Sullivan’s Island, Bulls Island. You’ve heard of all these places, right? But did you know they are also the titles and settings of just of few of Dorothea Benton Frank’s books? A New York Times bestselling author of 11 books, Frank was raised on Sullivan’s Island and currently divides her time between New Jersey and South Carolina. Just from the titles of her books, you can tell that she has a deep love for the Lowcountry.
I was introduced to Frank’s books by a dear family friend, and I have read six of them. We share our love of Frank’s hilariously clever works, and we feel so close to Frank that we often refer to her as “Dottie.” In fact, two summers ago, we drove around Sullivan’s Island for nearly an hour trying to find her childhood house that she vividly describes in one of her books. Crazy? Yes. But that is how much we love Dottie!
Not only are her books light, funny, and easy reads, they have an element of home in them for all of us who now live in the Lowcountry. Frank’s new book, Folly Beach, is coming out June 14. For all current and/or future fans, Frank is coming to the Barnes and Noble on Rivers Ave. on June 14 for a book signing at 2:00 p.m.!
