With an ever-innovative spirit, the College of Charleston brings you the English Language Institute (ELI) for non-native English speakers. The ELI is the result of collaboration between two departments on campus: The Center for Continuing Education and Professional Development, and the School of Education, Health and Human Performance.
The ELI provides students the opportunity for English language training through an intensive 20 hours per week program focusing on speaking, listening, writing, reading and TOEFL preparation. The opening session is Summer II (July 5 – August 4) followed by Fall and Spring semesters sessions. Classes are held both at the Main and North Campuses. The language institute is open to anyone 18 years or older and who has at least one year of English language instruction. Housing and meal plans are available if needed.
Non-native English speakers may choose to attend the ELI in order to:
- Prepare for admission into a graduate/undergraduate program at the College of Charleston or another university
- Prepare to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)
- Improve English skills for advancement in the workplace
- Acquire cultural knowledge of the area and the United States.
