We’re excited to welcome Reneé Shackelton, our new Admissions and Administrative Coordinator at the College of Charleston Graduate School! With a rich background in Industrial-Organizational Psychology and Human Resources, Reneé brings a wealth of knowledge and a fresh perspective to the team.
From Human Resources to Higher Education
Before joining us, Reneé completed her Master’s degree in Industrial-Organizational Psychology, along with Graduate Certificates in Leadership in Organizations and Quantitative Methods, in May. She also brings years of HR experience from diverse environments, such as a renewable energy organization, an orthopedic company, a STEM-focused nonprofit, and an HR consulting firm.
Reflecting on her journey, Reneé shares, “Throughout my career, I have gained valuable experience in training and development, recruitment, leadership, project development/implementation, and conducting needs assessments.” She believes that this varied background has given her the skills necessary for her current role, particularly in areas like data analysis, communication, and project management. “Working in various domains has taught me how to navigate diverse team dynamics, ensuring that everyone’s needs are met while keeping our common goals in focus,” she explains. Reneé’s adaptability and commitment to fostering supportive environments make her a fantastic fit for the Graduate School.
A Passion for Lifelong Learning and Curiosity
One unique aspect of Reneé is her “insatiable curiosity about the world.” She thrives on learning through diverse experiences and is excited by the fast-paced environment here at the College of Charleston. This curiosity drives her to approach her work with creativity and adaptability, constantly seeking out new solutions and insights.
First Impressions and Collaborative Surprises
Starting in late September, Reneé has already made a strong impression on both her colleagues and the graduate students she supports. “I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the experience so far,” she says, adding, “One thing that surprised me is the number of different departments and individuals involved.” The interdisciplinary nature of her work has allowed her to collaborate across teams, a facet she has come to appreciate deeply.
Connecting with students has also been a favorite part of Reneé’s new role. “It feels fulfilling to support them during their time here,” she reflects, recognizing the importance of staff support in enhancing students’ experiences—a sentiment she resonates with as a recent graduate herself.
A True Charlestonian at Heart
As someone who has always been drawn to the coast, Reneé feels at home in Charleston, especially with the city’s easy access to beaches. “The beach has always been my happy place since I was a kid, and I’m truly grateful to be able to call it home now!” she shares. This coastal connection adds a personal touch to her Charleston experience, enriching her journey here.
A Collaborative, Positive Approach to Teamwork
In the workplace, Reneé describes herself as “approachable and collaborative.” She values open discussion and believes in the power of diverse perspectives. “This open exchange of perspectives not only sparks creativity but also fosters motivation and engagement among team members,” she says. Her focus on building an inclusive environment is evident in her daily interactions and support for her colleagues.
Looking Forward: Making an Impact at the Graduate School
Reneé is motivated by the potential to make a meaningful difference in the lives of students and colleagues alike. She hopes to contribute to initiatives that enhance the experiences of staff, faculty, students, and prospective students, ensuring they have the resources they need to succeed. “Knowing that my efforts can positively impact students and colleagues drives me to give my best every day,” she says.
We’re thrilled to have Reneé on board and look forward to the positive impact she will continue to make at the College of Charleston Graduate School! Her dedication, collaborative spirit, and passion for student support already make her a valuable asset to our community.
