At the Graduate School of the College of Charleston, we celebrate alumni who are making an impact in their communities. Sally Van De Erve, a dedicated kindergarten teacher at Harbor View Elementary School, exemplifies the commitment to education and innovation that we hope to inspire in all our graduates.
Sally, who has been shaping young minds for 14 years, has taken a unique approach to keep her students engaged—through movement and play. In a recent feature by WCSC’s Live 5 News, Sally’s efforts were highlighted in a project called Recess Reset, which aims to enhance the outdoor play experience for children at her school. Sally understands that play is essential for both learning and development, and she’s working to bring more diverse, engaging equipment to her school’s playground.
Through the Recess Reset project, Sally and her colleagues hope to raise funds for additional playground resources, including a mud kitchen, climb and play logs, and ramps—items that will allow students to choose activities based on their energy levels and moods. The initiative aims to provide options for both active play and quieter, more focused activities.

The fundraising campaign runs through November 9th, and all donations go directly to supporting the students at Harbor View Elementary School.
Sally Van De Erve’s dedication to her students reflects the passion for lifelong learning that we value here at the College of Charleston. We are incredibly proud of her and the work she continues to do in her classroom and beyond.
