A study of the relationships in the educational triad of home, school, and community. Strategies for increasing communication and collaboration between parents and schools are addressed and the skills needed to be an advocate for young children are explored. Topics include current family demographics, the abused child, the parent community, rights and responsibilities, resources, and leadership training.

Dr. Katie Swart teaches this course during the fall term,
“This course primarily focuses on the importance of relationships in the educational triad of home, school, and community.
We discuss strategies for increasing communication and collaboration between families and schools and the skills needed to advocate for young children.
This course directly relates to my research as a primary focus is on the importance of building effective partnerships with families, schools, and the community.
I specifically focus on students’ perceptions of the importance of family engagement as well as how this information is shared and taught within pre-service teacher coursework.
Students also have the opportunity to learn from master teachers at our university lab school, the NE Miles Early Childhood Development Center (ECDC), which serves children ages two through kindergarten.
ECDC is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and is a certified Nature Explore program.
The instructors in this program are all early childhood education experts and former teachers!
