Meet Ken Marolda, a recent candidate for the city council! He graduated from The College of Charleston in 2019 with a master’s degree in Community Policy, Planning, and Design. Let’s learn a little more about him:

Ken is basically a superhero. In addition to his graduate degree at CofC, he has a Property Manager In-Charge (PMIC) license in SC and is a Public Notary. He has professional memberships at numerous organizations including the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce and Preservation Society of Charleston. Ken also has an incredible amount of civic experience. He has been recognized in the Charleston Region Business Journal’s “Forty Under 40” in 2023 and has co-founded two nonprofits! Serving the community led Ken to run for city council representing District 9 in the West Ashley area. He was even endorsed by the Charleston City Paper in a published article! His political position focuses on sustainable development and balancing healthy growth with quality of life:

  • Plan West Ashley – redevelopment initiative that supports both developers and the community
  • Dutch Dialogues Plan – following guidelines to mitigate stormwater and flooding risks
  •  Intersection Improvements – zoning and city design that reduces traffic congestion while remaining safe and respectful of neighbors

Ken describes how CofC prepared him for success:

“My education at the College of Charleston has given me the academic background to understand complex planning problems, while my experiences serving our community have given me practical experience in working on them. I believe this balance of intellectual inspiration and real-world problem-solving has prepared me to be the most qualified candidate in the race for District 9.” – Ken Marolda ’19

We wanted to take time to recognize the incredible accomplishments of Ken Marolda and for his efforts in making our city a better place to live. He is a true example of selfless leadership that all students can learn from.
