A Day with a GA – Brooke Hammons

This week on A Day with a GA we caught up with Brooke Hammons, a second year student in the Child Life Program. Brooke is the graduate assistant in the Teacher Education Department.

Name: Brooke Hammons

Hometown: Louisville, KY

Graduate Program/Year: MS in Child Life second year!

Previous Education (Undergrad and/or Grad): I received my BS in Child and Family Studies with a concentration in Child Development from Eastern Kentucky University.

Office or Department you work for: Graduate Assistant for the Teacher Education Department

What are your assistantship responsibilities? In this position I assist professors with revising papers, finding and annotating research articles, creating social media content for @cofcteachered, organizing events for the Teacher Leaders Program, help complete inventory, and any other tasks my professors need from me that week!

What do you like most about your position? I really enjoy the people I work for and around, this department has some of the kindest and easiest going individuals! I also love how flexible and consistent this job is, going to graduate school is so busy and working for the school eases a lot of that stress for me.

What question do you get asked most and what’s your typical answer? I do not work closely with students typically, although I am frequently asked about my strengths by professors to highlight my strengths while working!

What’s your favorite location on campus and why? Personally I love sitting in the cistern! It is beautiful and so relaxing, sometimes I go have lunch or do some online work out there on one of the benches.

What personal and/or professional accomplishment are you most proud of? I think my answer is both personal and professional. Coming to Charleston for graduate school was big for me. I moved 10 hours from home with only my dog to pursue my dream job by being accepted into a very competitive masters program! I was proud to be able to do this for myself both personally and professionally!

Name a creative work (book, movie, performance, etc.) you enjoyed recently and why. I recently read the book “Year of Yes” by Shonda Rhimes and it is by far my favorite book! The book is all about a moment in which she realized she needed to change her mindset, friendships, openness to do things, jump out of her comfort zone, etc. I loved it because it pushed me to changes things in my life and try new things while connecting it to personal funny stories, Greys Anatomy, and general advice!

What’s your favorite thing to do in Charleston? I really love going to live music whether that is at Windjammer, Party at the Point, Charleston Music Hall, etc.

Favorite Restaurant in Charleston Charleston being a foodie city is too hard to pick just one so… my favorite for brunch is Church and Union (literally anything), for lunch is Fuel (love the queso carne), and for dinner Fleet Landing (amazing lowcountry seafood pasta)! The atmosphere and food at these places are just unbeatable!

Describe your perfect day. My perfect day probably starts with breakfast or brunch with my favorite people (out somewhere or cooking at home) and then going shopping downtown in all the boutiques. I would love to eat at one of my favorite restaurants that day and then hit the beach with my dog & a good book! Probably ending the night with ice cream from Jeni’s and watching New Girl 🙂
