Tiffany’s Trujillo Travels, Part 2

When we last left Tiffany Dixon (Candidate- M.Ed. Languages), she was getting acclimated to her study abroad experience in Trujillo, Spain. Here is week two of Tiffany’s travel journal, where she discusses classroom life in Trujillo and her first excursion outside the city:

Classes were well underway and were going very well.  Because we only had five weeks we were learning so much in a short period of time, which proved very helpful since everything we learned we were also using in our daily lives.  We were able to participate in conversations with our host families during sobremesa (literally over the table; conversation during and after meals usually about politics, society, and daily life) about current events.  Another very helpful thing was that each day in our culture class a student would present a current event article that corresponded to our text for that day.  Of course, everything was conducted en español (in Spanish).

Almost every weekend we went on an excursion to different cities in Spain.  Our first was a day trip to Mérida, the capital city of the autonomous region of Extremadura, established in 25 B.C.!  Las comunidades autónomas (autonomous communities) are almost equivalent to the states here in the US.  We were able to see some artifacts and Roman structures that were even much older than the city of Trujillo, which was established in the 12th century, such as a Roman Ampitheatre.  We also saw the coliseum where gladiators would fight.  Visiting many picturesque cities in Spain, such as Mérida and Trujillo, seems like taking a trip to the past.

Remember, the College of Charleston offers programs in many different disciplines so you do not have to be in a language program like me to study abroad.  Stay tuned for Weeks 3-5 in Spain!
