Graduate Assistantships are one of the key elements of financial aid sought by many of our graduate students. Assistantships come with a regular salary, and for out of state students, abatements to bring tuition down to in-state levels. Assistantships are also a great tool for enhancing resumes for PhD programs and future job searches!
Here at the College, our Residence Life Office regularly hires several graduate assistants to work as Residence Hall Directors in the College’s undergraduate residence halls. These positions come with not only a salary, but a place to live on campus, time to attend classes, and a great living and working experience!

Greetings from the College of Charleston and the Department of Residence Life and Housing! We are beginning our search process for qualified students for Graduate Residence Hall Director positions within our Department. The Department of Residence Life and Housing currently employs ten graduate students as RHDs, and we anticipate that we will have approximately five vacancies.
Overview
Residence Hall Directors at CofC are 10-month live-in positions designed for graduate students. RHDs are responsible for the overall day-to-day operations of a residence hall or group of historic houses. RHDs are also responsible for the direct supervision of 15+ paraprofessional staff members, adjudication of disciplinary issues and the creation of a positive living/learning environment for undergraduate students.
Qualification
Applicants must be accepted in one of the College’s academic programs to be eligible to receive a graduate assistant position.
The RHD must have a strong desire to work with people and the ability to foster a positive living/learning environment is fundamental. A high energy level, self-discipline and control, commitment to students, strong work ethic, knowledge of self, ability to work under pressure, time and stress management, flexibility, effective communication and leadership skills, good judgment and a sense of humor are critical.
Compensation
Their remuneration is $13,000 a year, graduate class abatement if out of state student, a furnished apartment on campus within the Residence Hall in which they are assigned, phone service, utilities, and the ability to have designated parking in downtown Charleston, SC.
