John Poole, one of CofC’s EDEN students (an English and Education cognate program), was awarded a 2018 Student Research Fellowship for his project, “Homegrown: The Importance of Palmetto Writers in Carolina Classrooms.” John’s project focuses on studying the works of South Carolinian authors (Pat Conroy, Ron Rash, John Lane, Jacob Stroyer, Dubose Heyward, Sue Monk Kidd, Mary Alice Monroe, and Septima P. Clark) to ultimately explore how well these authors are represented in South Carolina’s public schools. Scott will be interviewing teachers, administrators, and students as well as conducing a survey of students at three South Carolina schools.
Student Research Fellowships are competitive awards, granted annually by South Carolina Humanities to undergraduate students in their sophomore or junior years.
More information about the Student Research Fellowships can be found through the SC Humanities website.
