Student Opportunities: Oakland Arts Review

Call for creative writing and graphic art

If you have a poem, story, script, or nonfiction essay that you would like to see published, see the call below from Jeff Chapman from the Oakland Arts Review (OAR), an undergraduate journal housed at Oakland University in Michigan.

Submissions are open year-round, but submissions for their 3rd issue open in October with finalized decisions by November.

Oakland Arts Review is also offering a prize, the Hajja Razia Sharif Sheikh Prize in Poetry and Nonfiction, awarded to a poem and essay that addresses the experience of being a Muslim in America. Entry is free, and the first- and second-place winners in each category will be awarded $500 and $300, respectively, and published in OAR. Authors do not have to identify as Muslim to be awarded the prize, but entrants must be undergraduate students currently enrolled in degree-granting colleges in the United States.

See Jeff Chapman’s email and contact information for OAR below.

My name is Jeff Chapman, and I’m a fiction professor at Oakland University in Michigan. I am working with our undergraduate students to publish the third issue of Oakland Arts Review, an international literary journal which features only undergraduate work. As you are in a position to inform your undergraduate students of publishing opportunities, we would love if you invited them to submit their work.

Students may submit poetry, fiction, nonfiction, scripts, and graphic narratives, as well as art for our cover. There is no submission fee, and they can submit online at our website: www.oaklandartsreview.com. Submissions are accepted year-round, but we will start considering work in October and will finalize decisions by November.

We are also excited to offer a prize this year—the Hajja Razia Sharif Sheikh Prize in Poetry and Nonfiction. One winning poem and essay will address the experience of being Muslim in America. While the entrants need not identify as Muslim, each piece must in some way speak to the experience—joys and
challenges—of being Muslim in America today, or describe components of the American Muslim experience in ways that educate and inform our readers. Entry is free, and the first- and second-place winners in each category will be awarded $500 and $300, respectively, and published in OAR. Entrants must be undergraduate students currently enrolled in degree-granting colleges in the United States.

Attached are posters for the journal and for the Hajja Razia Sharif Sheikh Prize. Please feel free to contact us with any questions you or your students may have.

Thank you in advance for spreading the word. We hope to showcase your students in our next issue.

All the best,

Jeff Chapman, Editor-in-Chief
