Congratulations to CofC alum and English major/CW concentrator Alexander Lumans, who recently received an Arctic Circle Residency for his creative writing. The competitive—and highly unusual—residency offers writers an opportunity to pursue their work while sailing aboard a three-masted tall ship in the Arctic Circle. From June 12 to July 1, Alex will set sail with over twenty other international artists and writers, where Alex will be writing and researching a novel about a lost Arctic sailing crew that encounters sublime phenomena—a result of intensified climate change.
Alex says he’s excited to “simply experience and witness this extreme environment firsthand and to use that as a nuanced foundation for my work. To see polar bears in the wild? To touch icebergs? To explore abandoned mining towns? It’s all energy!”
