This week’s installment in the True Independent Film Series is David Lynch’s eerie and compelling debut film, Eraserhead (1977). At turns comical and disturbing, the film depicts the oddball life of Henry Spencer who may or may not be of this planet (even he doesn’t know for sure). Lynch’s nightmarish world is a pulsing, throbbing mix of industrial machines and all too fleshy flesh. Those astute film students will detect influences of German Expressionism. But Lynch’s influences don’t end here. There’s also (among others) Kafka, Dada art, industrial music and musique concrète—all a swirl within the highly personal and very haunting vision of David Lynch. The film was not only written, produced and directed by Lynch, but he did the sound effects, the musical score, the special effects, and art direction. Truly an independent venture.
