All About Scientists was developed by Dr. William Veal, a professor of science education at the College of Charleston, with the help of his students and his graduate assistant Bradley Becker. The website was created in similar fashion towards Allaboutexplorers.com, serving as a way to teach students about the Internet. While the internet is a great resource for gathering information, its results vary based on the user’s appropriate knowledge of the tool. It is our belief that there is an important skill students must learn in order to discern fact from fiction while browsing the web.
The purpose of the website is to educate youth about the pitfalls of the internet. By providing fictional information, our intended goal is to teach the children that, though information is on the internet that does not mean it is factually correct.
This is in an attempt to counteract the general idea one might have to perform a standard google search and nothing more. An initial search will usually bring Wikipedia to the front of the que, which most students know not to use because their teachers have told them not to. But what about the following websites later in the que?
We are not the only sight practicing this form of misinformation, but as search engine results update, and websites change, we have decided by creating our own webpage we are in control of any future changes that might take place.
Site Contents:
Aligning with our goal, each bibliography is a fictional story. We worked to insure the website looked professional to increase believability including the use of a school .edu handle, which kids often correlate to having factual information. While there are many truths in each bibliography using keywords, achievements, and awards, there are just as many lies, ensuring nothing can be trusted, not even the photographs.
