AI vs Human Art

Reagan Lynch

I do think that AI can create art, since it has a lot of intelligence, but there isn’t any emotion behind the art. It creates everything to be perfect, and that shouldn’t be the purpose of art.

I understand using AI as some inspiration behind your art. Using it as a tool vs using it to actually create the artwork is two different things. Using it as a tool is taking advantage of what you are given and what resources you have, while using it to actually make the art, gets rid of the actual purpose behind it. Art has emotion, creativity, and some sort of intention behind it, and AI lacks these qualities.

Kirby Ferguson says “Remixing can empower you to be more creative.” Kirby Ferguson (1 minute in). I think the meaning behind what he is saying here is that you can take ideas that have already been used, and you can turn it into your own, sort of like adding onto it by using your own creativity. I think that this could apply to artists. They could be using AI or some sort of tool, to help them start it, or just to give them some imagery, and then after they have that imagery, they can add on their own ideas, and make it their own. But if they just ask AI to create some artwork, the AI tool will make it, but it will seem empty in a way, and not complete.

If you look at the comparison of real art vs AI art, it seems like there is no emotion behind it, it’s just using colors, and patterns to create something that it saw. It is perfect. And art is not perfect. You may look at the piece of work and think that it is beautiful, and meaningful, but what does the piece really mean? It means nothing, because AI has no sense of emotion or vulnerability, which is how many artists create art. In other words, it’s not meaningful in any way, it’s just something perfect to look at. With human made art, it shows the choices, and their feelings, and maybe the intention behind why they made it, and if the person speaks on why they made it, and how they made them feel, then you will be more drawn to it.

Overall, I think that art is human, and AI cannot recreate it the way that we can. It doesn’t show any empathy or meaning behind it, and that, in my opinion, is what makes it art. I do however think that it can be a good tool to use at times, but I think that you should also reference when you use it because your art should be true and honest to others, and yourself.
