Where The Pelicans Sing

Cora Reynolds

Where the Pelicans Sing

Through the salt spray the pelicans will grace,

Their mighty wings trace,

As they guard the tidal shores,

Soaring through the skies whispering lore.

The skies radiate gold on the dune,

As the pelicans sing a salt washed tune,

They gather many as one,

Like a family looking for fun.

White egrets hide amongst the sea grass,

Their ghost like presence hidden in the green,

These birds of white cannot show their light,

Beauty is only shown in the daylight.

The cries of the night a sacred sound,

The wild beings of the world gather around,

The beauty of the Sea and the lives of the most free.

I chose this painting because it reminds me of my hometown beach. I did not emulate a specific poet or form of writing. I wanted to make this poem completely my own and freely write about what I noticed and felt without restraint. I did use end rhyme because in a good way it gave me structure and flow in the reading of the poem. In my poem I talked about the sensory elements of the coastal environment, the smell of salt air, and the feel and sound of birds and the ocean. I explained how the egrets hide in the dune grass at night for protections hiding their beautiful white bodies. I tried to describe the depiction of the pelicans on the beach emphasizing their beauty, bond and freedom. Pelicans are almost never alone. I think of them as a family living a beautiful coastal life. Something this painting made me think deeply about is the freedom of wild animals. They are tied down to nothing and have no constraints in life; they live freely enjoying the beauty of the natural world. This is something I greatly admire and wish as people we could do the same. I focused most on the art of this painting and broke stanzas at each different observation and interpretation.

I went to the Gibbes Museum and I did not use generative AI on this assignment.
