Fiery flamenco, a dance of soul and grace
In vibrant swirls she moves, a vision to embrace
Her dress a whirlwind of color, a blooming garden, red and pink intertwined
Each step a story to be told
Her head up high looking up, looking away
What is happening outside of the dance
moving to the rhythm, away from the reality, the problems we ignore
Begging the question
Who are we forgetting?
Her hands fluttering light as air without a care in the world
What a privilege it is to not have to worry about the issues that don’t affect us.
Dancing, smiling, and bright
I went to the Gibbs museum and I did not use AI to generate this post.
Reflection: I chose this piece of work created by Edwin Hareleston because I saw multiple possibilities about how to approach this. I decided to start the poem by explaining the art, for example, the flamenco dance and the bright vivivid colors. I wanted to incorporate a different point of view to this piece because when I look at it it doesn’t make me feel happy. I realized that when observing this art I felt sad but intrigued. I wanted to write about the real problems that contrast to the happiness of this painting. For example, during this time period a lot of people were suffering whether it was money or race related. I thought it would be interesting to take the light from this work and use it to talk about the inequalities back then that society “danced” away from because it didn’t affect everyone.
