The Night Watch

The protectors of the city prepare

The men gather before setting out

weapons ready equipped for action

guns drawn to uphold the peace

dedicating their lives for this duty

must provide this service for the people

guards of the night watch over as the city sleeps

working together with honor the men prevail

mischief is stopped where it stands

the eyes in the dark keeping guard

owls of the night treating criminals as prey

The captain assigns each man a position

guards of the gates, police of the streets

ready for anything to happen

a little girl acting as a light for these men

an angel in the darkness protecting the honorable

a job that must be done

no outsiders may takeover

After viewing this painting, I created ideas about who these men were and what they were doing. I established that these men were guards who watch over their city during the night. It looks like the men are preparing for their night since they are all setting up their equipment. I tried to use a similar format to some of the other poems that were generally describing the painting and the actions occurring. Also trying to add some meaning to who these men are. This is a job crucial to keeping a city safe and uphold the peace for the good citizens that live there. I mostly focused on the duty these men were acting on and what they were protecting. I wasn’t sure what the little girls role was in the painting. I noticed that she is brighter than the others so I made her into an angel figure meant to watch over these men while they are doing their jobs. I also pointed out the captain of the group in the center of the painting that leads them night after night giving them direction.
