The show Mad Men became wildly popular after its first season, prompting its nomination for multiple different awards. Modern view of popular television shows seems to be influenced either by how comedic they are, or how outrageous. Mad Men doesn’t fall into this realm of the norm for popular television, yet is set to release the seventh season to high demand. Perhaps this element of society reflects nostalgia for aspects of the past that can be seen in Mad Men for many of the viewers. At first glance the show glamorizes its era of the late 50’s and 60’s, but after following the show and watching the lives of the characters unravel because of apparent limitations restricting them from happiness, it becomes less appealing. Fascination with Mad Men shows interest people have in the negative side of a time period which was allegedly so carefree. The most alluring character of the show, Donald Draper, clearly exhibits a deep rooted unhappiness despite his apparently glamorous life. His obvious alcoholism marks this. Popular interest in this show pertains to a gilded era of the fifties and sixties, possibly due to influence from older generations who remembered this era better with time.
