Commencement is a special time of year for all our graduates, their families, their friends, and our faculty and staff. Each year, it is an honor to celebrate the School of Education, Health, and Human Performance graduating students during the Commencement Celebration and Awards Ceremony.
This year was extra special as we recognized our two inaugural Alumni of the Year honorees, Mrs. Jane Riley Gambrell and Dr. Emily Darr.
Mrs. Jane Gambrell recently retired as the executive director of the Communities in Schools of the Charleston Area, Inc. Under her leadership, the organization grew from its work in one school with 75 students to include as many as 30 schools servings as many as 13,000 students in grades K-12. A Charleston native, Jane was influenced by her family’s commitment to community service when deciding to pursue a career in education.
In addition to her professional responsibilities, Jane has served in many ways, including as chair of the Mayor’s Commission for Children Youth and Families and with numerous other community board memberships in the fields of education, children’s services, and women’s issues. Among the honors she has received, Jane was a recipient of the Dewar Gordon Holmes Award for Alumnae Service to Ashley Hall and was the 2013 Non-Profit Leader presented by the Women’s Leadership Council of the Trident United Way.
Dr. Emily Darr completed her undergraduate work here and received the Bachelor of Science in exercise science while playing Division I volleyball. She then acquired her medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina. She completed her internship at Spartanburg Regional Hospital prior to completing her physical medicine and rehabilitation residency at the University of Virginia. Following her training, Emily returned to MUSC to start a physiatry practice in 2011.
As a member of theMUSC Department of Orthopedics and the MUSC Spine Center, Emily’s primary focus is providing excellent care to patients with interventional and non-operative spine care needs. We know Emily as an individual who is always willing to lend a helping hand, and we appreciate her efforts on behalf of our students.
