Embracing Change: From Lab Coats to Law School
Meet Maggie, who has recently been accepted into one of the top law school programs in the United States! Here’s a look at her journey and the path that led her there.
Maggie always knew she wanted to go into healthcare. She initially took a traditional route, majoring in Biochemistry. However, after a few months of analyzing molecules in the lab, she realized she wanted a field that aligned more closely with her interests. That’s why she made the switch to Public Health, where she has since thrived as a star student. This change broadened her perspective on the role of policy in healthcare, ultimately fueling her passion for law school, something she would never have imagined pursuing if you had asked her freshman-year Biochemistry self.
Maggie was candid about the challenges and struggles she faced during her time at college. She admitted that feeling a sense of belonging on campus took time. Her solution? Getting out and about. Let’s go, Maggie! She focused on putting herself out there, joining extracurricular activities, and taking classes outside her comfort zone. She leaves us with an inspiring, tearful message for students facing similar challenges:
“Embrace change, be open to new opportunities, and don’t be afraid to follow a path that feels right for you, even if it’s different from what you originally planned.”
I absolutely love that! As someone who never thought I’d enjoy theatre but has now taken three theatre courses, I can’t emphasize enough the importance of trying things outside your comfort zone!
Maggie also encourages students to take advantage of campus resources, such as the amazing Career Center and various organizations that help navigate college life. She has personally utilized many of these resources while staying actively involved on campus, fueling her passion for public health, expanding her network, and opening up incredible opportunities.
Currently, Maggie serves as the Executive Director of Charleston Miracle, the President of Friends of MSF, a Career Center Assistant, and an Honors Peer Facilitator. Wow! Calling her an underachiever would be an understatement, no wonder she got into such an incredible law school!
What’s next for Maggie?
During law school, she hopes to deepen her understanding of public health issues and shape policies that improve healthcare access and equity, whether through government agencies, nonprofits, or advocacy groups. She will continue to build on everything she has learned in undergrad, staying involved and growing in her field.
