Congratulations to CofC Computer Science majors Shefali Emmanuel and Jasmine Randolph whose team won “Best Beginner Hack” in the Empowerment Track at the Fifth Annual Hackathon hosted by the University of Virginia.
The overnight event, which took place March 24-25, requires teams of programmers to work collaboratively to create a web or mobile application/platform from scratch.
This year’s event, which focused on diversity, featured three main categories: safety, equality, and empowerment. Grand prizes, as well as second place and beginner prizes, were awarded for the “top hacks” of each of the three tracks of the event.
The empowerment track prize, won by Emmanuel and Randolph’s team, was awarded to applications and platforms which provide people with the means for success, particularly in relation to business or charitable venture.
The biggest benefit to attending and participating in group events like Hackathon UVA is the opportunity it provides for students to network with peers and prospective employers.
Meals are provided for this no-fee event and prizes were awarded to the top hacks. Shefali and Jasmine, who teamed up with a student from UMD, won $400 and medals.
