When I was researching Lisbon one thing that caught my eye and came up many times was the great beaches that were so nearby and easily accessible. While I had made no set plans to visit any of these beaches ahead of time I knew it was something that I was gonna do, the day I ended up making was the not one I expected though. It was a Friday and we didn’t have a class that day, and I had gone out the night before so I slept late and wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with my day. I did know and still do know that I don’t want to waste any time while I am here so I have been trying to do something every day. What I ended up doing was jumping on a train to a nearby beach town called Cascais. Again I had done no prior research about this town before even getting on the train so as I am taking the train that rides along the coast I am just looking at my phone about what to do while in Cascais. What I find out is they have both river beaches and Atlantic Ocean beaches. Seeing as I grew up on the east coast and went to Atlantic Ocean beaches my whole life, I decided I wanted to see what it was like on the other side. So I went to this place called “Guincho Beach”, this beach turned out to be a surfers’ paradise as it had large waves that were far out giving surfers the ability to ride the waves for a long time. As someone who does not surf I instead laid out my towel, popped in my headphone, and enjoyed the views. I did this for a few hours and was as relaxed as ever. The day got even better though because as it was time to head back rather than ordering a “Bolt”, which is the European Uber, I took one of the electric scooters that you can use for like 20 cents a minute and rode it back into town. This was just so fun for me as got to ride along the ocean and dunes while experiencing a new place in just such a different way. Also just like in the United States, it seems like they are used to people using scooters on the street because no cars gave me any trouble. So once I got back into town, I jumped back on the train to Lisbon and just got to think about how great this completely unexpected and unplanned day was.
