Spain by Camille Burch

The cultural customs in Spain are quite funny. The people love to go out at night, but during the day it is very quiet. This is especially true in a town like Trujillo because of the size. There is a custom of “tapas”, where you go out and snack with friends, as well as drink. Some examples of this food would be Jamón Ibérico, pasta, or potatoes. The locals really enjoy going out and having a casual drink, or going to the local clubs. Another custom is the fair. There are fairs all over the country, but the one in Trujillo was spectacular. There were so many colorful rides, flashing lights, and the crowd was very lively. I personally went on a ride that went up very high and dropped you far down. I am usually scared of heights, but with friends I didn’t mind it as much. I also got to eat fair food, which was surprisingly American. There were chicken nuggets, french fries, burgers, etc. I got some fries, and they were honestly not half bad. As for the clubbing scene, the drinking age is eighteen so there are many young people who go out every night and party to release stress. Tapas are definitely my favorite cultural custom, though, as I got to try many new foods. My favorite Spanish tapas dish is patatas bravas. They are fried potatoes in a spicy sauce. Why do I like them so much? Spanish people don’t really favor spicy foods, and as an American who loves spicy food, these potatoes helped a lot with my craving for more “American-esque” food. I also noticed that the meal times are completely different than in America, this initially threw me off a lot. However, I found that eating lunch at 2pm and dinner at 11pm kept me full for longer, and that the Spanish don’t really snack between meals like Americans might.
