24 hours in New castle by Giselle Garcia

One of the stops on our journey through the UK was New Castle Upon Tyne. A city up in the northern region of England located right on the Tyne River. I didn’t have a lot of expectations when I arrived in Newcastle. It was late and we had taken the train from Nottingham. As we traveled farther up north the weather grew colder and colder. After we got settled in our hotel rooms we went to the restaurant that was located right under the hotel building to grab some dinner. We enjoyed some delicious food along with some yummy cocktails. Drinking age in the UK is 18 so it was interesting to experience my first legal drink while I was abroad, instead of on my 21st birthday like most Americans. After dinner we decided to explore the town and see if there were any cool spots to hangout and talk to locals. We found a place called “Flares”. It was a Monday night so there weren’t a lot of people out and about. Flares was decorated in a cute 70s disco theme, and had a photo booth that we enjoyed taking fun little pictures. As we were leaving Flares it started to snow. Something about snow is very serene and beautiful to me. Living in places where it doesn’t get very cold my whole life, it was fun to see snow especially in the night where it blankets streets and cars. As we were leaving we ran into some locals that were our age. Once these kids found out we were American they started up a conversation intrigued in the differences of cultures. We spent the whole night talking to people our age about differences between the US and the UK. Topics like sports, school, politics, and of course differences in dialect came up. It was a fun experience to learn about UK culture in real time rather than reading about it in a book or learning about it in a classroom. By the end of the trip we all agreed that New Castle was our favorite stop and we would remember that night forever.
