Reflection by Jake Castino

I am so grateful for my study abroad experience, and I feel so incredibly lucky that I was able to do it. Being in Greece was an absolute dream, and the people, food, and accessible locations were surreal and something I never thought I would be able to experience. Athens was a great homebase, and the entire has such a rich history and so many natural and man-made sites that are breathtaking to see and experience. As a History and International Studies major, this experience served me incredibly well on both of those fronts. Greece is a place with so much rich history and a ton of the oldest well-preserved places and monuments in the world. The first time that I walked up the Acropolis hill in Athens will forever be a cherished memory for me.

I also got to take several history classes with the American College of Greece. My favorite was a class I took on modern Greek history and the country’s emergence as a modern nation, as it was an area of history I did not know much about, and I found the course fascinating. This experience reaffirmed my desire to learn more about International Relations and pursue foreign policy work as a future career, and I am grateful for that as well. I definitely want to study and work abroad in the future. I have already started looking into work abroad programs that I can participate in post-graduation, and I have found several graduate schools in Europe that I would be interested in in the International Relations field.

If I could give future study abroad students one piece of advice, I would just tell them to live in the moment. I had to consciously remind myself to enjoy what was happening to me and what I was able to do right now instead of constantly worrying about what was next. Study abroad is a whirlwind experience, but it is also the coolest thing I have ever been able to do in my life. I am so thankful to have had this opportunity, and the lessons I have taken from it will serve me for the rest of my life.
