Embracing the Unknown: My Cultural Journey Abroad by Juliet Rivera-Cedillo

When I first arrived in Seoul, South Korea, I was full of excitement and curiosity—but nothing could have prepared me for the richness of the culture I was about to experience. From ancient palaces to futuristic cityscapes, Seoul is a vibrant blend of tradition and modernity, and living here has been nothing short of life-changing. One of the most unforgettable parts of my journey has been attending Korean festivals. From colorful Hanbok worn during Chuseok (Korean Thanksgiving) to the electrifying energy of Lantern Festivals and K-Pop street performances, I found myself immersed in traditions that date back centuries. These events aren’t just fun—they’re a deep reflection of the Korean people’s pride in their heritage. I’ve been lucky to explore some iconic places in and around Seoul—Gyeongbokgung Palace, Myeongdong’s bustling shopping streets, tranquil Bukchon Hanok Village, and vibrant Hongdae nightlife. I created a short video to capture some of these moments. Each clip is a memory of adventure, culture, and connection. Now part of my video blog shows how different the natural environment is from what I grew up with.

In Seoul, you’re never far from a mountain trail, riverside park, or a beautifully maintained temple garden tucked into the city. Back home, I was used to wide, open landscapes and long car rides to reach nature. But here, nature is part of daily life. People hike regularly—even before work! It’s part of the lifestyle and a form of balance. What surprised me most was how strong the sense of community is when it comes to exploring the country. Families, students, co-workers—they all take time to travel within Korea, not just abroad. There’s a shared pride in discovering new regions, food, and traditions. Seeing locals cheerfully encouraging each other to visit different cities, islands, or cultural landmarks inspired me to do the same. It made me feel welcomed—not just as a visitor, but as someone invited to understand and appreciate the country’s beauty more deeply.
