Typical Day by Natalie Dimeo

My typical day here usually involves waking up early to get ready for class. On the way to class my friends and I stopped at a local cafe with the best coffee and sandwiches. Some days we will enjoy our breakfast at the cafe, or other days we will take out and eat it in the building where our classes are. After class, if we don’t have a field trip, I often go to a different cafe and complete whatever work that has been assigned that week. After that I like to shop around whether it is at the leather market, local stores, thrift shops, Zara, and other vendors. When I go to the vendors or local stores, I always talk with the workers. We connect over the items they are selling and the fascinating story of where they items come from. We chat about where I am from and there is always some sort of connection amongst us. Then, I usually go across the bridge in Florence and take my long walk. I ended up at church steps and journal about my trip. This is one of my favorite activities to do. Most of our field trips included going to art museums or famous churches around Florence. One of my favorite art museums was the Uffizi Gallery, which is known for its extensive collection of Italian Renaissance art. It is also known for its beautiful architecture and historical significance, it was owned by the Medici family, who was a powerful dynasty in Florence during the Renaissance. My favorite works of art in the Uffizi were done by an artist named Sandro Botticelli. The two paintings in there were called “Primavera” and “The Birth of Venus.” On our tour, I was able to learn that the inspiration for the painting “Primavera” was based on classical mythology. It illustrated themes such as spring, love, and fertility as well as depicting the harmony between humanity and nature. Botticelli’s subject for “The Birth of Venus” included Venus as well as Zephyrus and Aura who were the wind gods. This painting was representative of the birth of beauty and the divine nature of love. I personally enjoy art history because of my appreciation for aesthetics, however I felt it really helped me gain a cultural understanding for the historical period of the Renaissance.
