My name is Olivia Coleman and I am a Senior at the College of Charleston. I am
majoring in Communication and Minoring in Women and Gender Studies. This Fall semester I
am studying in Trujillo, Spain with the College; this program includes courses from the
Communication, Political Science, and Spanish departments. I chose this program because of its
wonderful professors and opportunity to delve deeper into my major and minor requirements,
since some Communication and Political Science courses can also count towards Women and
Gender Studies requirements. Some goals I have set for my time abroad are to be able to hold a
fluent conversation in Spanish by the time I leave, and to travel to the southern region of Spain.
Upon doing some research, I’ve learned that this region is rich in culture in history; from the
flamenco-rich city of Triana to paella on the coast, there is much to learn and explore here. I also
learned that the Spanish government is in a time of transition right now, thus many social issues
are beginning to surface. I am very interested in learning more about these things through
experience and conversations with my host family.
