Goodbye to Trujillo by Ava Tanner

From the first week (second image) to the last evening (first image) my group and I enjoyed every second in the wonderful country of Spain. I am incredibly thankful to the college for such an amazing and eye-opening experience, it truly was a once in a lifetime trip. The best piece of advice I can give a prospective study abroad student is, do it! As long as they are adaptable and willing to immerse themselves in unfamiliar cultures a program abroad is an extremely positive experience. The other students and I joke that we grew up three years in three months as the amount of independence, the challenges abroad, and the amazing relationships we cultivated have made us more mature and overall better people.

I think one of my favorite experiences was the friendly and convivial atmosphere fostered by the Spanish orientation to family. This communal dynamic of Spaniard life helps students feel as though they are one of the children, cousins, or family friends. Everyone in Spain is super welcoming and almost always ready to share a valued part of their lifestyle. For example, exchanging cooking tips and tricks from one culture to another. This occurred when one of the host moms invited me over to have lunch, my friend, Natalie prepared. Natalie’s family has roots in Mexico so some of her cooking is influenced her this culture like her spicy chicken noodle soup. After a fun time making a mess of her host mom, Angeles, kitchen she extended an invitation for dinner so I could learn how to cook like a Spaniard. Tortilla or Carne con Tomate anyone? Then this interaction lead to a proposal I come back the following weekend and showcase my American cooking skills. This series of events demonstrates the hospitable atmosphere of Spain, especially Trujillo.

I will dearly miss the Trujillianos I befriended throughout my journey in Spain, as well as the American students I visited with. Once again, a huge thank you to The College of Charleston for allowing me this experience.
