What advice do I have for future study abroad students? Be in the moment and try your absolute best to stay there. One thing I learned quickly from my study abroad experience is the fact that nothing lasts forever. I currently have less than a month left here in Spain, and I can’t grasp the fact that it wasn’t yesterday that my plane touched down in Madrid. The weather has turned cold, and I lay comfortably in my cozy room, typing this in the home of my host family. This semester has been a culmination of ups and downs, missing my family back home while simultaneously cultivating lifelong relationships here in Spain. I have been constantly traveling while also balancing schoolwork and looking for myself in every place I visit. I feel as if it is easy to forget yourself, to become wrapped up in these moments of thought, worry, and distraction without fully being present where you are. Just the other day as I was walking home in the dim lights of these ancient streets and buildings, my fingers were numb with cold, and a 6-hour time difference was gnawing at my heart, I realized where exactly I was. Before I know it, I’ll be back to my usual routine in the States and this time here will be like it never existed if I don’t make an effort to be present. So, say yes to those plans even if you’re tired, embrace all the uncertainty, and step outside of your comfort zone. Create a clean slate to fully grasp this experience of just being. I have to thank this experience for opening my eyes to just a fraction of what this vast, beautiful world has to offer, and I am forever grateful for the excitement it has sparked for what my future holds.
