Ursensollen, Germany by Chloe Goff

My time working for NGO Menschen für Menschen in Munich, Germany coincidentally coincided with one of their largest fundraising events in the past few years. It was being held in a village a few hours north of Munich called Ursensollen, which has a large German-Ethiopian population. The event took place in a central community area, with a gorgeous river running through the middle of grassy areas, which we all took advantage of because of the heat! We had tons of fun catering, including a North-African food truck, an Ethiopian coffee stand and naturally several wine and beer bars. All of the proceeds from the food trucks go directly to my company, too. We also had several musical performances: a Bavarian Reggae band, Bavarian dancers, a family folk trio, and a Jamaican father-daughter duo. We set up many tents and picnic tables for families to sit at, and the traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony was performed. I had the honor to record all of the content for MfM’s social media pages that day, and actively posted on Instagram and Facebook as the day went on. Several of my photos and videos were even used for a larger video that recapped the event. I assisted in the children’s area too, and REALLY practiced my German skills since some of the children only knew a few English words. I was constantly asked to paint “Regenbögen” and “Herzen” and tried my best to understand and negotiate with their constant chatter! It was such a wonderful experience to be invited to this event, experience a new area of Germany, indulge in Ethiopian culture and meet tons of new people from all over. Leading up to the events, I did feel some nervousness going into a new environment where German had a large chance of being the only spoken language. However, I would say it was one of my favorite and most unique experiences of the summer and I am glad I took the risk and attended!
