A Reflection by Emilee Pope

Reflecting on my time abroad and the experience I’ve gained, I can definitely say choosing to do this program has significantly impacted the course of my life and career. I would recommend any student to step out of their comfort zone and study abroad while they have the opportunity. Some advice that I have for future students is to go into the experience by putting yourself out there as much as possible. Talking to other people on your trip as soon as you get there and making plans and connections as soon as you get there will make your trip so much better. Coming into the trip I was expecting to do most things on my own, but I was pleasantly surprised by my ability to connect with others in my group and enjoy having these new experiences with others. My program had so many valuable speakers and lessons from real life organizations and companies that will benefit me for the rest of my career. I can now say that I went and was able to meet people from the actual World Health Organization, which is a big deal in my field. I also made connections with a member of an organization called Save the City in Paris that will be a great tool for my interest in health sustainability. I was proud of myself for showing a lot of independence and maturity in this trip by being able to talk to people and have meaningful conversations with those who have made a living out of my career field. I think being abroad made me expand my view of opportunity in the world and strayed me away from feeling like the world is so small. Seeing so many people and different things made me realize that I can go anywhere and that I don’t have to feel trapped when looking for job opportunities. I will forever be thankful for this experience and feel so privileged to have had this incredible opportunity.
