London is a giant melting pot of different cultures from around the world and with that come different customs, festivals, and perspectives. While my days are mostly packed with my studying I have had the pleasure of going to musicals, museums, and concerts and trying to immerse myself with the people of London. When growing up I never had the chance to see The Wizard of Oz so when I was invited to go to the musical Wicked I did not think I would understand or like it but wow was I wrong. This musical put its twist on the characters of Oz and showed the viewers that no good deed goes unpaid, especially in the case of Elphaba the witch who only wanted to help others but got the short end of the stick every single time because people judge her based on her skin being green. This along with seeing Natalia Lafourcade in concert inspired me to get out of my comfort zone and experience things even if I did not know what they were.
The main cultural difference between the England and U.S. is the drinking culture is much strong in England with one pub for every hundred individuals, they drive on the opposite side of the road, most museums are free, and the food is much more healthier. While these differences were a cultural shock I did wish the U.S. would adopt similar laws to allow healthier and safer food items which would help decrease the obesity problem we currently face along with allowing museums to be free so that everyone would have the chance to see all the beautiful art and history. What I have done to adapt to the culture here is to talk to the locals and ask their opinion on where the best places to visit or what restaurants they recommend so that I can get a real look into what life here is like.
