Reflection by Astrid Betancur

I have had a lot of fun on this trip, and this will undoubtedly be some of the best memories of my life. I recommend it to anyone that wants to make friends, experience different cultures, and see the beauties Spain has to offer. We have taken many trips, some with the school, some without the school. Without the school, about 24 of us went to Lisbon, Portugal. It was beautiful and it was so cool to visit two countries in a month. Some of the group also went to Ibiza, Cadiz, Barcelona, and France. With the school we went to Caceres, Merida, Cordoba, Granada, Sevilla, and soon Toledo and Madrid.

All of them offer different cultures and different architecture that you will learn about in class beforehand so it will be even cooler to see it in person. The classes are so much fun, and you are encouraged to participate. You learn so much in such a small amount of time about the language, the cultures, and the history.

Some of my highlights are the flamenco dance we saw in Granada, the Roman ruins of Merida, guided tours about the history of the castles in Extremadura, riding limebikes around Sevilla, and the beautiful Winery Habla. Also shopping at Zara, Pull and Bear, and cute boutiques, going out at night and listening to Spanish music, foosball championships at bars, and getting super excited when meeting another American. Buying cookies from nuns, seeing the Alhambra, touring la Mezquita de Córdoba, going inside cathedrals, and volunteering at the English Academy here in Trujillo where we have met really cool people.

I didn’t know I was going to meet so many new people in such a short amount of time. It’s my last week here and I am not quite processing all the people I have met and all the adventures we have had. It’s amazing how I’m reaching the end and I don’t feel like I’m visiting anymore, I feel like a local. I hope to one day come back.
