Mykonos by Grace Droneck

So far one of my favorite experiences has been going to Mykonos. During the first weekend here, we had a long weekend where the professors told us that students in the past took a trip to one of the islands that weekend. Somehow all of us decided on Mykonos. There are two ways to get there: ferry or plane. The group I went with decided to take the ferry but two of the girls we know decided to take a plane. I’ve been on ferries before, but this was nothing like I’ve experienced before. These ferries are very big, and each company is different. The one we took didn’t have assigned seating but if you got there close to departure time good luck finding a seat. We got there maybe 30-45 minutes before departure and had to walk around the entire ferry multiple times to find seats. The one we took ended up stopping at a total of 3 islands, Mykonos being the last. Don’t count on the ferries being on time because we arrived later than scheduled. The first thing we learned from the girls that flew in was getting an Uber is nearly impossible. Luckily one of the girls found a driving company that was able to pick us up from the port and bring us to our hotel.

The hotel we stayed at was on the other side of the island but still had everything we needed. On the first day, we decided to sit by the pool and just relax. We got lunch at a restaurant nearby; where we learned the rumors about Mykonos being expensive is very true. Just like in Athens, there were stray cats everywhere and we had one come up to us while we were eating. We did give in and fed it some of our leftover food. On the second full day, we had two other girls and I decided to go downtown Mykonos, check out the city, and do some shopping. I had seen TikTok’s about Greece being very windy and until this point, it wasn’t too bad, but this day was very windy. The roads and sidewalks are very small and often don’t go straight. You could get lost very easily but luckily the area is somewhat small.

On the way back we took a fast ferry which at the time we thought meant it didn’t stop at any other island. We were very wrong. It did stop at one island, but it doesn’t lie when it says fast ferry. This day was also very windy so unfortunately for us, the ferry was very rocky. I almost never get motion sick, but this ferry changed that. This ferry also had assigned seating, unlike the other one. Overall, it was a very fun weekend!
