Buenos Aires Reflection by Brooke Cameron

My time in Buenos Aires will be something I will never forget. I made incredible memories and friends that I will have for a lifetime, and I found a home in Buenos Aires that I cannot wait to go back to.

As far as accomplishments go, I am most proud of the progress in my Spanish. Although there is always still room for improvement and my Spanish is far from perfect, I can communicate so many more ideas. In addition, I have become so much more comfortable in being wrong. Making mistakes is sometimes the best way to learn and an important part in general when learning a new language. Beyond just a personal goal of improving my Spanish, my hope is to incorporate the language into my career. Do I know how yet? Not exactly. But the progress I made with the language only helped me confirm its importance to me and that it is in fact a tangible goal.

Studying abroad has definitely changed the way I feel about my place in the world. For starters, I felt more out of place upon returning to my hometown than I did upon arriving in Buenos Aires. I feel like I left a part of me behind in Argentina. With that, I would definitely consider interning, working, or studying abroad again. I am currently thinking that I will complete graduate school outside of the country, and maybe even back in Buenos Aires. And as a whole, I feel more strongly about learning about the people I share this world with. This was important to me beforehand but even more so now. As a member of this Earth, I feel it is important to learn about the lives of the other people I share this beautiful planet with.

My advice for future students is to go abroad. Anywhere. And if you are already planning on it, perfect! And don’t be afraid to get out of your comfort zone while abroad. Push yourself to try new things you normally wouldn’t and to make mistakes. Doing these two things will teach you more about yourself than you could have ever imagined. ¡Disfruta tu tiempo en el extranjero!
