Biodiversity and Beauty in Costa Rica by Emma Koessl

Costa Rica has some of the greatest biodiversity I have ever seen. The amount of wildlife that inhabits the rainforests and beaches is amazing. Not only are the animals unique so are the vegetation and flowers around the country. Never have I seen so many bright and wonderful colors in my life. The flowers are so vibrant you don’t think they are real and the macaws and toucans are surreal. The only other time I have seen monkeys was my time in Thailand and the monkeys in Costa Rica are so different. During my time here I saw two out of the three main types; the white face monkeys and the howler monkeys. I was so fortunate to be able to see the howler monkeys up close because usually you only hear them rather than see them. One of our tour guides said that if you invade their space too much they would throw their poop at you. I decided to not test that theory and kept my space, but they are very loud and very interesting to listen to. The howler monkeys are also very territorial and the alpha is the one to howl at you and try to get you to leave. The white face monkeys are one of the most intelligent primates in Costa Rica. In some of the national reserves the white face monkeys will steal from you, they will take your snacks, sunglasses, towels, hats, and more. The guides tell you not to chase them or to run from them as a gang of them will chase after you. I think they are really funny and interesting and I was hoping that someone would run so I could see the monkeys chase them but it never happened. The insects here are crazy big and also very colorful, I am constantly amazed and surprised by the colors of bright orange, green, yellow and reds. When we went hiking to a waterfall a giant green fly landed on my arm, the eyes were neon green and the wings were burnt orange. It was one of the craziest things I have ever seen in my life. One thing that I would love to do if I every came back to Costa Rica is to try and see the poisonous frogs, they say they are tiny but have the most vibrant colors on an amphibian. One frog is called the blue jean frog, they have a bright red body and bright blue legs giving the effect they are wearing blue jeans!
