A Typical Day in Trujillo by Michelle White

Upon arriving in Trujillo, Spain for my faculty led study abroad program through the College of
Charleston, I fell in love! Trujillo is a quaint and charming town full of rich history, beautiful
architecture, and friendly locals. A typical day in Trujillo starts at my host family’s house. It
bustles with energy from my two younger host siblings who are getting ready for school. A quick
bite of toast and a sip of coffee and we are all out the door to start the day. I walk about a mile to
Convento de La Coria. This is a beautiful space that initially housed an order of local Franciscan
nuns. As I walk up the steps and into the classroom, I can feel the rich history beneath my feet
and feel inspired to learn. After class we take a break for café! Taking time for a break alongside
warm coffee and delicious pastries is a Spanish custom I will be sad to leave upon returning to
the United States. After this break I return to class and then head back to my host family’s house
for lunch and a siesta. This is a relaxing and rejuvenating time. I initially was not used to
returning home in the middle of the day for a sit down lunch, but have grown to really enjoy this
time. After a delicious lunch cooked by my host mom and a quick lay down, I go back to La
Coria for one more class of the day. Afterwards there is usually a beautiful sunset to watch
before heading home for the evening. On the weekends Trujillo bustles with locals and tourists
alike, enjoying the charm of the town. I especially enjoy visiting Café de Trujillo for a café con
leche y pastelería to catch up with classmates or complete assignments for school.
