Bonjour à tous! by Kathleen Trainor

Bonjour à tous! My name is Kathleen Trainor and I’m currently studying abroad in La Rochelle, France. As I look back on the calendar, it turns out I’ve already spent a month in France! I no longer feel like I’m constantly adjusting to the French culture and it seems like I am a part of the natural flow. Each day it’s easier to speak with the locals and add in new words and phrases that I’ve learned.

Before I went abroad, I had been studying French for four years but had little practice with real life conversations. My first few days of classes were a little difficult as I attempted to communicate with French and other foreign students. Despite the early struggles, I feel that I’m finally improving in my speaking ability and my perception of the language. My speaking skills have also improved by living with a host family. My host family is not afraid to correct me and also exposes me to conversational French, such as current events and everyday dinner topics.

Even though I’ve only been in France for a month, I’ve already experienced some culture shock and adjusted my original plan for studying abroad. Culture shock first happened to me upon arriving at my host mom’s house. She immediately gave the classic three kiss “bisou” on each cheek, which caught me off guard for a moment. We then sat down to dinner that lasted about two hours with several courses. I realized that I enjoyed these French habits, especially the long meals, which allowed for great conversation and time to appreciate the amazing food. In truth, the food is definitely my favorite part of France. Fresh food is available everywhere and a croissant is just a short walk away from the university. I’ve had time to try preparing my own dishes and will continue to make them when I return home to Charleston.

The summer before La Rochelle, I had a plan set up for studying abroad: transportation, weekend trips, food, and classes were all researched. However, I’ve realized that I am prepared for this experience, but I also need to be influenced by the culture and people. I’m excited to see where this opportunity takes throughout the rest of the semester!
