Randy Beaver, Environmental Health and Safety
Briefly describe your role.
My role is to lead the efforts toward making the College a safe and healthy workplace free from recognized hazards that may present a risk of injury or death. In addition, I am responsible for the Emergency Management of the College.
What is the function of your department?
To reduce the risk of liability, prevent injuries, and to direct the College in avoiding regulatory citations due to poor management practices as they relate to environmental health and safety issues. And, to assure that employees and students know how to respond to emergency situations.
How long have you been working at the College?
Five years.
What brought you to the College?
Opportunity and preparedness. I had vacationed in the Charleston area since 1992. My kids were grown and I was ready for the move to get away from the winter doldrums and snow. Then this position became available.
What do you like most about your job?
Making a difference. I can see direct positive results from my safety training, customer service for indoor air quality and environmental health and safety-based interactions with faculty and staff.
What are some of your favorite memories from the College?
I’m still making memories every day. The whole journey has been a great experience.
What are your hobbies and interests?
I am consumed by creating historically accurate miniature dioramas and figures. I have built museum displays in Charleston for a couple of museums and am currently in the process of discussions with others. I just finished the main exhibit piece for the 300th Anniversary of the Powder Magazine.
What is something that your colleagues would be surprised to learn about you?
I’m an engineer by training; my Master’s degree focused on Agricultural and Biological safety and facility design. I have farmed (the ultimate recycling/sustainability experience) most of my life, even now I am working with community sustainable agriculture groups. I have 8-foot sea island blooming cotton plants, rice starts, and indigo seeds on the deck of our apartment.
