Students from the Office of Institutional Diversity’s Launchpad for Success program are on the move!
The Dewberry Hotel hosted the cohort on October 17 for an off-campus site visit. The tour kicked off with students introducing themselves and sharing their majors and hometowns. From there, they learned about the hotel’s founder – commercial real estate developer John Dewberry – the story behind the historic federal building in which the hotel is now housed and the day-to-day roles staff fill to ensure guests have a memorable stay the five-star hotel.
Intricately designed and outfitted with high-end décor, students were also treated to sneak peeks of the hotel’s guest rooms which range in both price and size. As one of Charleston’s premier hotels, The Dewberry’s top-notch hospitality was on full display as students were treated to a complimentary glass of “Dewberry Tea” and the hotel’s special blend of sweet-and-savory popcorn.
Career development teams emphasized during the visit included: transferrable skills, global fluency/intercultural competence, organizational culture, work ethic and teamwork. Students capped of the experience with an opportunity to share their resumes and schedule interviews for part-time job opportunities. One student secured a part-time position with the hotel, and another is currently being considered for a summer internship opportunity
