This is a bit of a stretch, but while reading the first few chapters of this novel, all I could think about was the movie, The Lorax. The book The Lorax does not go into as much detail as the movie adaptation, and the movie adds a lot more to the plot since it is originally a children’s book. The book explains that the trees are gone, but it mainly talks about the Oncelor getting greedy and wanting to destroy the trees to make money off of his Thneeds.
The book does not talk about the children wanting to see a real life tree. What got me thinking was the fact that Rick Deckard wants real sheep to replace his android sheep. It is similar to The Lorax, because in that movie, the main character, Ted, wants to learn about real trees since he has never seen one. They live in a town that is walled in with a fake atmosphere and no live plants. They even have to get bottled air so they have fresh air to breath in. They have electric trees around town that do not look natural at all, and the trees even have specific settings that can be changed in order to fit the season. Technically it is not a story about an apocalypse, but they live in similar circumstances.
The Lorax is trying to show kids what will happen if we don’t take care of the planet. Androids follows a similar theme, but it is targeted towards adults instead of children. There are no live animals in The Lorax either, because they were forced to leave since the environment could no longer sustain them. At one point, Ted meets an electric cat who is a spy for the town mayor. The movie does not mention anyone wondering about animals or what happened to them, but parts of the movie does show when animals were around and why they had to leave. They were friends with the Oncelor, who was eventually the one responsible for ruining the land because he got greedy. In the end, Ted gets the last tree seed ever from the Oncelor and plants the tree in the middle of town so it can grow. The grass is made out of concrete though, so he has to break through it in order to plant the seed.
