Employers today note a lack of skills relating to communication, teamwork/collaboration, and critical thinking when it comes to filling workplace positions, all of which are highly desired qualities for job candidates. Within the afterschool community it’s these skills the students are likely to develop, leading to qualified future workers. Most often in afterschool and summer programs for younger children, communication and teamwork are stressed. Research has shown that students involved in afterschool programs tend to get along better with their peers, having positive social interactions and relationships. As children get older the focus in programs shifts to more specialized interests, exposing students to a wide array of possibilities with potential for future career opportunities. Afterschool programs not only provide a safe and engaging learning environment, but also have the added benefit of vocational skill development. With that in mind, its crucial these programs’ leaders and teachers are considering not only short term goals as related to student achievement, but long term goals guiding students into valuable future careers.
