I titled my final digital story “The Cross that Carries my Peace.” In a general sense, my story depicts how I am able to replace my anxiety with peace while traveling far from home. It is my faith that allows me to do this. During my time in Spoleto, I sought out all the crosses I could. I chose to base my project around cross images I photographed because it is the meaning of the cross that gives me this peace and comfort while traveling. I wouldn’t have been able to travel to Spoleto without Jesus. I wanted to depict why I feel this way and how it has influenced my study abroad experience. I hoped that combining these photos, sounds, and words would evoke a peaceful feeling similar to the one I often experience because of my faith.
I incorporated the use of personal visuals and sounds to engage the audience with more than just words. I worked to make my video stimulating and engaging with the typewriter effect, color choices, photos, and sounds. Throughout our visual storytelling course, I learned how much of an impact the senses have on a story- what we see, what we hear, etc. I wished to engage and express in a way that PinePoint did. There was such beauty and curiosity in embodying myself into an experience that had nothing to do with me. At the beginning, PinePoint meant nothing to me, but the way it was presented made me feel enthralled. I wanted my story to do the same for others. I worked hard to fill my story with purpose at every angle- purpose in both the meaning and the design. I was intentional with my choices of colors, words, photos, and sounds. I wanted it all to wrap together to create an overwhelming sense of peace and even joy while watching.
