‘The Issue with Females’: Abortion, Infanticide, and Ethics in Southern Slavery

lecture flyer

November 12 – “’The Issue with Females’: Abortion, Infanticide, and Ethics in Southern Slavery” –  6:00pm in Addlestone 227

– Exciting lecture coming up in two weeks! Dr. Alexis Wells-Oghoghomeh will deliver African American Studies’ first Conseula Francis Emerging Scholar lecture for the year on Tuesday, November 12 at 6PM in Addlestone 227. Her talk is entitled “‘The Issue of Females’: Abortion, Infanticide, and Ethics in Southern Slavery” and is drawn from her forthcoming book, tentatively titled The Souls of Womenfolk.

As you can imagine, this talk sits at the intersection of African American studies, religious studies, and women’s and gender studies, so I think lots of faculty, students, staff, and community members will find it compelling! Dr. Wells-Oghoghomeh is an assistant professor of religious studies at Vanderbilt University and her work is sure to shake up the world!

Planned Parenthood Generation Action: “SlutWalk” Peaceful March & Rally

slutwalk info flyer

Wednesday, October 30 – gather at 5:15 in Cougar Mall, march begins at 5:30 and ends in Stern Gardens for a rally at 6:00pm

The SlutWalk, hosted by Planned Parenthood Generation Action, is a peaceful empowering march followed by a rally in which participants dress however they choose without fear of being judged in this safe space — because dress, sexuality, gender, and race/ethnicity, is never an invitation for violence. Encouraged attire is whatever the marcher is comfortable with, like bra’s, Halloween costumes, gender-neutral clothing, everyday clothing, organization shirts, etc (though we still have to follow the law, people). Our individuality is beautiful and should be celebrated, not shamed.

Marchers will gather on Wednesday, October 30th in Cougar Mall at 5:15, and will commence marching at 5:30 pm, walking down Glebe, and end in Stern Gardens for a rally around 6 pm with speakers including GSEC, BSU, and ASA as well as open discussion and music/dancing. Blank and premade posters will be available.

It is important to remind campus of this ever-constant issue since, according to rainn.org, more sexual assaults on campus take place during the fall semester than in the spring semester. Halloween parties and costumes are not an excuse to violate another person, as there is never a reason for this.
PPGA is making a clear statement to CofC that we will not tolerate harmful stigmas or rape culture which are prevalent at college parties. We never owe you sex. Costumes are not consent, “I’m not sure” and no response is not consent. We stand against victim-blaming, sexual harassment, gender harassment, and slut shaming–because shame is for offenders.

All are welcome–please bring your friends and spread the word!

International Pronouns Day & Spirit Day Events, 10/16-17

INTERNATIONAL PRONOUNS DAY & SPIRIT DAY 2019 are this week!

International Pronouns Day

Second Annual Observance: October 16, 2019

International Pronouns Day seeks to make respecting, sharing, and educating about personal pronouns commonplace. Referring to people by the pronouns they determine for themselves is basic to human dignity, but many transgender and gender nonconforming people are regularly called by the wrong pronouns, which causes erasure and marginalization.

International Pronouns Day occurs on the third Wednesday of October each year, and in 2019 is scheduled for Wednesday, October 16, 2019. The College of Charleston has officially endorsed International Pronouns Day, joining hundreds of groups around the world, including groups based in Australia, Canada, Italy, the Netherlands, Rwanda, Singapore, the UK, the USA, and individual registrants in a variety of additional locations such as Denmark, Hong Kong, and Mexico. The full list of endorsers is online at:

https://pronounsday.org/endorsers

To recognize International Pronouns Day, WGS, MSPS, GSEC, Out Front, Prism and our local LGBTQ+ youth organization, We Are Family, will be conducting outreach on Cougar Mall, and hosting educational events on Wednesday and Thursday of this week (see info below!).

Show your support by posting online using the #PronounsDay hashtag, encouraging create supportive institutional policies and practices, and creating awareness on our campus and in the Charleston community. “Trans and gender nonconforming people, especially Black folks and those perceived to be feminine, are often harmed by many forms of interpersonal and systemic violence. An action as small as respecting names and pronouns can begin a conversation about justice and about creating the workplaces, educational environments, and communities where we all thrive,” said Shige Sakurai (they), the campaign’s founder and the creator of the educational MyPronouns.org website. “For me, it’s a spiritual undertaking, and it’s about wellbeing. We have to end assumptions and erasure and the harm they create.”

“Intersecting forms of oppression deeply impact transgender communities. These actions are part of the larger work of creating and sustaining inclusive and supportive communities for everyone,” said Luca Maurer (he), a campaign Executive Board member, about this observance.
