Coming Up: AAST Spring 2019 Film Festival – “Afrofuturism on Film”

Mark your calendars! February brings us the Spring 2019 African American Studies Film Festival. This semester’s theme is “Afrofuturism on Film,” and though the films in the festival take us from Los Angeles and the flooded Gulf Coast to outer space and Wakanda, all of them envision futures centered on the peoples and cultures of Africa and the Diaspora. The screenings are open to the public and will have free popcorn and refreshments, and each screening will be followed by discussions of the films led by AAST faculty.

  • February 4: Blade (discussion led by Anthony Greene)
  • February 11: Beasts of the Southern Wild (discussion led by Lisa Young)
  • February 18: Pumzi and Other Shorts* (discussion led by Mari Crabtree)
  • February 25: Black Panther (discussion led by Gary Jackson and Matthew Cressler)

*”other shorts” includes Janelle Monae’s Dirty Computer, clips from Sun Ra’sSpace is the Place, and excerpts of a Parliament concert from their original Mothership Connection tour

We hope to see you at one (or ALL!) of the screenings!
