Embedding a Librarian into your course
The notion of “embedding” a librarian into one’s course is not a new one. At the Addlestone library we strive to collaborate with faculty of every discipline to teach students research, information literacy and digital literacy skills. Librarians work closely with the faculty member to develop a special lecture that focuses on the type of research and content specific to each course. Librarians can also create library research guides call Libguides and other tools that specifically target library resources related to your course. By having a librarian deliver a 50 minute lecture for your curriculum, the librarian can assist you by helping your students, 1) better understand the research process, 2) develop strategies for conducting research, 3) find and use scholarly resources including primary source material, and 4) avoid plagiarism all of which will help you by potentially receiving better research papers. More in depth instruction may require more than a 50 minute lecture and or individual research consultations. To find out more about embedding a librarian into your course, please contact Phillip Powell @ powellp@cofc.edu.
Interlibrary Loan
Interlibrary Loan is a service that allows students, faculty and staff to obtain books and articles that our library may not own. Any College of Charleston faculty, staff, or student with a valid library card can submit ILL requests except for: students with delinquent loans, overdue fines, or those enrolled non-credit courses; spouses or children; alumni; special patrons; or guest researchers.
Undergraduates are limited to five outstanding requests at one time. Graduates are limited to ten. Graduate assistants should submit requests for themselves in their own name. Requests for faculty should be under the faculty member’s name. Requests are processed in the order received. Requests are not accepted by telephone. For more information including borrowing guidelines or to place a request, please visit http://www.cofc.edu/library/find/ill/index.php.
